During 1960-1970 when public could not accept different opinion from other, a school in Yogyakarta establish a concept that teach the students so they could give their opinion freely. The school is De Britto senior high school which located at Laksda Adisucipto street 161. The concept that they establish called Freedom education. It is not like an education that is free from charge. It means to help the student freely choose the good with courage, even the choice is as good or as bad. Besides, freedom education also teaches the students to have great responsibility for what they choose. Indeed Freedom education gives some several positive effects for them such as to think, decide, create and socialize with other.
First, Freedom education makes students think a head about what they have to do as the first. The school teaches the student to think ahead about what happen or what they are going to do next after they decide. The school also helps the students to decide the best from the choices that appear. For example, from the first grade in senior high school the students must start to think about what class that they want to choose in the second grade. The teacher helps the students to think a head about what faculty that they want to choose in the university, so the class that they choose in the second grade will support the faculty that they choose in the university. From there the students are trained to think further. It is the same when the students do for choosing the university. The teacher tells them about the best university with their best faculty so it will support the job they will take in the future.
The second effect is by thinking a head, students can decide what action they must d. They are trained to think ahead so they can decide what they have to choose or what action that they must do in every situation. When earthquake struck Yogyakarta, many people shouted about tsunami and water come. Of course in the situation like that people could not think clearly, but the students could. They could think logically Yogyakarta surrounded with mountain and hills, so it can not be a tsunami in place like that except at the beach side. Then the students tried to calm down the crowd that run into everywhere. The disaster causes a lot of victim and people who need help. Then the students took initiative to build a post that serve some food for the victim like noodles and rice with egg. Another group of students separated to be a volunteer in every hospital and place that need help and of course all of that supported by the teacher.
Being creative to find new paths to solve their problem and tell their idea communicatively is another effect from the freedom education. Means they trained to find not only one way to solve their problem, but think, find or creatively make another way. Then they have to tell it communicatively so the others will understand about what it means. In study activity, teacher gives a topic or problem for them and they have to discus it. When they find ways to solve it, they have to tell and explain their idea to the teacher and another student. So they will be responsible above what they say. Same with giving opinion in some discussion or forum, when giving opinion they have to explain about what they said, what are they thinking so they can give opinion like that.
At the end, freedom education is established to make a student or man with independent personality and can socialize with other. An independent student is a responsible student too. The school makes an event called Live In, where students sent to many places like village that located far from town and with low facilities. Students lived with villagers who act like their parents for a couple days or a week. They have to help their parents such as farming, collecting branches for cooking, harvesting etc. Not all of the parents live in a good house with bath room or have good food like in town and the student must accept the reality how their parents lived. From that event, student could experience another way of living and learn live independently.
In short, freedom education gives some several positive effects. It makes students optimalize their ability and use it to socialize at public. So when they graduate from that school, with that ability they will be ready to live in public. In my experience, this method was very helpful and it already changes my personality.
